Toothache always tends to come at a completely inopportune time. If you can’t go to the dentist right away, there are some natural and home remedies that can ease symptoms.

There are many different causes of tooth and toothache pain. In most cases, the trigger is cavities, periodontal disease, or inflammation of the gums. But other diseases can also manifest themselves in the form of pain in the teeth.


Do your teeth hurt and is it Sunday? Or is your dentist on vacation? First aid for acute pain is provided by home remedies that have a calming effect.

It is advisable to stop the consumption of nicotine and alcohol in case of acute toothache. Also, you should avoid hard foods (such as raw apples or carrots), as they can make symptoms worse.

It should be noted that home and herbal remedies do not help everyone in all cases and that if adverse symptoms occur, treatment must be stopped. Try several to see which method works best for you.

1. Ice bag for cooling

In the case of injuries or bruises, the affected areas are often deflated with an ice pack or a cold pack. Cold constricts blood vessels and slows down inflammatory processes. Cooling also provides a kind of anesthetic. Heat, on the other hand, should be avoided as it generally increases pain.

You can place a cold pack or ice on the cheek, always with a towel or cloth between the cold element and the skin, so as not to cause injury. If you don’t have ice or cold packs, you can fill a glass with ice water and gently press it on the painful area. You can also apply a bag of frozen vegetables.

2. The crushed onion acts against bacteria

An onion not only helps with earache and inflammation, but also with toothache. To do this, place a chopped onion in a cloth and hold it outside the affected area, in contact with the skin of the cheek for a few minutes.

The antibacterial properties of onion help reduce inflammation and pain. Alternatively you can use a clove of garlic and gently chew it several times on the affected mouth area.

3. Herbal infusions such as mouthwash

Infusions such as sage, mint or chamomile have an anti-inflammatory effect and can be used as a mouthwash.

You can drink the infusions as usual or use them to rinse your mouth for a minute or two. In addition to sage, peppermint, or chamomile, black or green tea is also recommended for this application.

4. Saline solutions for infections

Toothache can be reduced by using a homemade saline solution. To make it, dissolve two teaspoons of salt in a glass of warm water. This solution is not drunk, but is left in the mouth for up to 2 minutes and then rinsed off. Salt fights the growth of bacteria in the infected area and relieves uncomfortable stress on soft tissues.

5. Essential oils

Clove oil and tea tree oil have a disinfecting and antiseptic effect and help in case of bacterial inflammation in the mouth.

To benefit from its properties, simply apply a few drops of oil to the aching tooth. Alternatively, you can chew a clove for several minutes on the affected tooth area. After several minutes, the clove oil is released and fully unfolds its effect. You can also gargle with diluted tea tree oil.

6. Fresh kale leaves

Kale contains certain enzymes that have a decongestant effect on gingivitis. The best way to use fresh kale leaves is to place them on a damp linen cloth and keep it on your sore cheek. After half an hour, the pain-relieving effect will begin to show.


These home remedies can be soothing and momentarily eliminate or reduce pain, but they are not a substitute for dental work, prescription medications, or pain relievers. Therefore, you should make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible to have the affected tooth or gum treated.
